Too busy to go to Goodwill! Who’d a Thunk it?

Posted in bargain hunting, collecting, Goodwill BLog with tags , , , , on September 30, 2009 by jopila

I have been busy – really busy getting ready for the huge antique – collectible sale that a friend and I are setting up in my building in town.

http://www.GoodSaleGirls.com

Oy!

It will be so fun.

If I did not already own most of the stuff – just by the looks of it – I would really be excited to shop!

The prices are low, so that dealers can resell and make a profit, and so that regular collectors will have a blast.

I am watching the clock tick down and realizing the truck is busted – wondering how to get the mid-century fireplace and the gas pump to the sale….

I am sure that is what this weekend is for.

IMG_5095Now, I am not saying that ALL of this is my stuff….

IMG_5096No siree-bob.

Some of that is my friend’s stuff.

Here is the deal:

I think I will be having a few MORE sales down the road – as there is more, uh, inventory to release to the general public…

🙂

The Value of Art

Posted in art, collecting with tags , , , on September 26, 2009 by jopila

Some people do not see art.

I don’t know WHAT they see.

I see art all the time.

Everywhere.

ALL the time.

This morning it was at a soccer game in St. Helens.

The field is way the heck far away from the parking lot.

The football field is MUCH closer to the parking lot.

(priorities…)

This was a container set against a fence along the trek to the soccer field.

IMG_5076It is kinda cool looking and I think when I play with this in photoshop – it will be WAY cool.

***************************

I belong to the local historic group and there is an item I have coveted since I first saw it.

It was in a building loaned to my group and the owners of the building did not want it.

It was to be in the rummage sale today and I did not want to be the one to price it, as I wanted to buy it.

The lady who priced it – priced it too low… I told her more.

Then I marked it “SOLD.”

Here it is:

DSCN6603This is a piece made for a commercial business and it is BIG for a house.

But it will fit just fine in my house.

I will just make it work.

It has that smoky mirrored glass and then oh my!

It has cool – funky – fabulous carved art!    And LOTS of it!

DSCN6605There are two doors that open and inside is a chalkboard and two cork bulletin boards.

I think that it was made for a seed company that is no longer in business and the building has changed hands and this meant nothing to the current owners.

I am seeing seeds and pods and plants in a very abstract way.

I googled the artists name and I think I may have found him in a roundabout way.

I will be curious to see if I can get in touch with him and talk to him about this work.

DSCN6606Yep.

I am sure of it now.

Seeds.

Pods.

Little growing plants.

yep.

Chalk Art

Every year my towns art gallery sponsors a chalk art festival.

It is one of those great family events that brings all kinds of people to one area  in one small town for one day.

For just $10 – you get a square of sidewalk and a box of chalk.

We have oooooodles of chalk from the past like 19 years.

DSCN6540This one was my hands down favorite.

She was a featured artist and I wish I had watched her create this.  It took only an hour.

I would have LOVED to watch the process.

I wish I could afford a piece of her art.

Maybe you can.

Check out Valley Art in Forest Grove, Oregon for work by Amanda Houston and lots of other great art too.

Geez.

THAT sounded like a commercial.

DSCN6524Isn’t art by kids a cool thing?

DSCN6530Stunning work from a 10 year old.

DSCN6531This is how I feel when I see the pile of bills and then check my bank account online.

Goodwill shopping has been dismal lately.

IMG_4897

This teapot by Bennett Welsh was $14.99.

THAT is why shopping has been dismal.

Prices are stoopid crazy there.

A 70’s sort of trip to Goodwill today.

I lucked out at my local Goodwill store today.

Looky what I got:

IMG_4882I am pretty sure this is Cathrineholm.

I did not have this pattern – and now I do!

Guess what I paid?

Did ya guess yet, cause here comes the answer…

IMG_4883Oh yeah!

I turned the corner to the next aisle in the store and when I saw this next thing – I knew without even touching it – just what it was…

IMG_4884A nice big old vintage piece of Heller plastic!

They probably got donated by the same people…

IMG_4886 I think they look good together – but alas….

I think I will put the heller on ebay and keep the enamelware.

(for now….)

Be sure to check out my BIG sale!

It may even be worth coming from other states to this sale.

Other planets,  maybe not.

A Friendly and Artful Field Trip!

I like art.

ALL kinds of art.

About 10 years ago I got a great watercolor painting of a young woman in a white bathing suit.

Last year I found the artist’s address and mailed a couple of pictures of the painting to verify it was his work.

He called me right up and we had a great chat.

He remembered EVERYTHING about the painting that he did 38 years ago.

Well, he called me last week and invited me to an open studio event this weekend.

How could I say no?

I brought my painting to his studio.

IMG_4790

The Artist is James Kirk and he is a retired art professor.

There were all kinds of interesting folks in an out of the studio that afternoon.

I was pleased to meet the artist and when I am 85 years old – like him, I want to be as vibrant and creative and have just as much fun as him!

Here is a picture of James Kirk and the painting he did for Jantzen swimwear in 1971.

Jantzen bought the painting in 1971 – and how it ended up at Goodwill….

who know.

Oh, Yes, James Kirk got a BIG kick out of telling people where I got the painting and the pittance that I paid for it!

IMG_4794

I wish I lived nearer to where he lives and I know I would have great fun taking classes from him!

His studio is in a part of his house – and of course, the house is an  art-filled house.

Yay for art filled houses!

IMG_4792Cool Ceramic horses on his porch.

Alas, my friend and I could not stay all day.

(although I felt like I coulda!)

We had to mosey on and see what we could do with the rest of the afternoon.

We found an alley in a nearby town to photograph with my iphone.

Oh, I do love alleys!

IMG_4802

Nice sign.

I like rust.

A lot.

IMG_4803

Looky!

Nail rust!

Ahhhh…..

(I will photoshop this and see what glorious variations I can create!)

IMG_4826

Rusty Metal door.

Oh Joy!

IMG_4831

This may be my favorite of the alley pictures.

Off we hit the road to home and I stopped at a house that is right off the road and it has been falling down for decades.

IMG_4853

Interesting sort of shiny technical box in front of abandoned house.

IMG_4840

I swear this bottom pane of glass has a ghostly figure of a woman in it.

I can see it two different ways.

One – she is facing away from me with a bun in her silver hair and the other – she is facing me.

Just now I notice in the middle pane of glass – a little kid standing in the yard with a tall tree on the left and a hedge in the background.

hmmmm…

I have been so busy getting ready for the BIG SALE – that I have neglected writing on my blog.

Check it out what has been keeping me so danged busy!

A Field Trip!

Posted in art, bargain hunting, collecting, goodwill, Goodwill Store, iphone, thrift store with tags , , , , , , , , on September 5, 2009 by jopila

Some pals and I went on a field trip to the Art Museum where there was an Escher exhibit.

It took weeks to figure out the time and day that 4 busy people could coordinate the time to accomplish time off together.

It worked!

Guess what?

They do not allow people to take pictures in the museum.

I was going through iphone photo withdrawal.

So I decided to buck the authority and took this picture:

IMG_4656Is this art?

Perhaps.

It IS my purse hanging on the inside hook of the bathroom stall.

IMG_4661The ad for the Escher exhibit – taken OUTSIDE the museum.

We then went to a location that had rave reviews as a food cart corral with lots of variety of good food.

The location was correct – the food – not so good.

The place I wanted dinner from, was not open.

IMG_4676I wanted BBQ.

Instead, I got this:

IMG_4672A $7 crepe that took about 15 minutes to cook and it was totally uninspired.

BUT!

I did get a great photo of our shoes and then photo-shopped it!

briteshoesOh, and I found a great vintage plastic organizer that should sell for about $100 at the big  Goodwill Store in PDX that we went to after our dismal dinner experience.

It was a fun adventure and I am looking forward to more field trips in the future.
