Packrats R me!

I have been selling off a lot of my stuff lately.

I posted some photos to Flickr tonight and realized that, HEY!  I still have a lot of stuff.

Show and tell time:

DSCN7261I do so like Cathrineholm enamelware.

I often leave the price tags on so I can uh, gloat, about the wee bit I paid for some marvelous mid century goodies.

I am just a bit quirky that way.

I like pretty colored plastic ware from the 70’s too!

DSCN7246Oh, I like ALL kinds of stuff!

More.

A Swedish Dish – A bad Bunny and more

DSCN7157I found a cool 60’s dish from Sweden last night and put it on ebay today.

It took me about 1/2 hour of googling to find out it was called Jie and that indeed, I was correct about it being vintage.

I KNEW it was a cool looking thing.   Just was not positive it was not a brand new Ikea mid-century knock off.

Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference.

Older pottery “feels” a little different than newer.

Nice, eh?

Not so nice.

This was so bad – it gave me the heebie-jeebies.

And then Martin got tagged.

Shopping shopping and more

I do like to shop.

I like the hunting part of thrift store shopping and over the years I have bought my fair share of stuff.

It was close to 20 years ago that I learned that I could actually part with some stuff and make money!

A little antique store in our town was turning into a “mall” – a new idea at the time, and  friend and I decided to share a space for about $35 each(that was a big scary investment) and we had a place to sell things.

Oh, and sell we did.  It was great.

Selling has been my hobby for years.

Now that the economy has my travel agency biz circling the drain- selling has now become a priority.

I did not know if I would like selling more full time –  I thought it might take the fun out of it  – but it has not.

To top it off – an antique pal and I are are going to have a big BIG sale in my building in October.

Check it out:  www.goodsalegirls.com  – we have been busy amassing our stuff and pricing it and soon getting it set out for sale.

DSCN6267Piles and piles of stuff.  Good stuff, mind you….

It will be great fun to decorate the place with all the gathered items!

I always wanted to build a website and it was pretty easy on my new(ish) mac computer.   I have an idea or two or three for more websites.

I want to learn how to host my own blog.

That can’t be too difficult.

I just got Photoshop Elements and it has sucked away some of my evening hours.

Not Skunked at the Goodwill Store Today

Posted in art, bargain hunting, collecting, goodwill, Goodwill Store, mid century, thrift store with tags , , , , , , on February 1, 2009 by jopila

My hotel in Seattle is less than a mile from a Goodwill store.  How could I not scoot over there at the first opportunity?

That opportunity was today.

There is not a parking lot at this Goodwill store and we found a spot a few blocks away.

Upon leaving the car, we were bombarded by loud obscenities from across the street.  An irate irritated F-bombing local character.   Wow.  We ain’t in Kansas anymore.

The Goodwill store was mostly clothes – no furniture and “hip” young and friendly employees.

I found an old picture from Missoula Montana with a nice frame for $3.99 and then this  woodblock print.

dscn3162I know what you are thinking when you see this print.

I know that your first thought is – “Hey, that is a skunk cabbage!”

Or maybe, “Hey, that is on phallic lookin’ skunk cabbage!”

Either way, it is a vintage 1972 print by Dale De Armond.   I googled her and her stuff is rather nice.

This is an early piece by her.

dscn3165I guess if you have seen one skunk cabbage, you have seen them all.

If you have smelled a skunk cabbage, you know how aptly it is named.

I was pleased to be out of my regular Goodwill store range and still find a good thing.

Yay.

Heller and Plastic Philosophy?

Posted in bargain hunting, collecting, goodwill, Goodwill Store, mid century, thrift store with tags , , , on January 25, 2009 by jopila

I found some great vintage plastic Heller plates on Saturday at Goodwill.

They had them in stacks of three with rubber bands around them.

dscn2989I really like this stuff.

dscn2996

I think I have enough of this for now that I can sell what I found this week.

I was washing these plates, so I could take pretty pictures of them and I found a post-it note -in between  a couple of plates.

dscn2998I don’t know if the post-it note was there and the Goodwill workers just did not see it – or did a worker in the back room put that note there?

dscn29991ONE LOVE

What on earth does this mean?

Is it a Universal Truth, or a simple longing?

One is the loneliest number.

Love is all you need.

Goodwill Philosophy or???

A Norwegian Garden of Lotus Leaves ala’ Cathrineholm

Posted in bargain hunting, collecting, Danish Modern, eames era, goodwill, mid century, thrift store with tags , , , , , on December 19, 2008 by jopila

I think collectors are born, not made.

I have always had collections.  When I was a kid – it was free stuff – rocks – driftwood – bugs – feathers – I even kept all my baby teeth!

Some collections fall out of favor with me and away they go.

Goodbye salt and pepper collection – (except for white range-top ones)  – Goodbye Black Americana – Goodbye Arts and Crafts pottery…

I still collect some things.

Not all things anymore.

Cathrineholm is the name of a now defunct Norwegian company and my favorite pattern is the lotus pattern manufactured in the 1960’s.

dscn2436 Nice, eh?

Note that as a natural born collector, I can honestly say that too much is really not enough…

dscn2437They look so pretty together in a lotus garden sort of way.

Did I mention that I LOVE a bargain?

I have been collecting on the cheap so long that it just feels natural.

dscn2440OMG – just LOOK at the price tag on that one!

I almost cried when that thrift store moved out of town!

I got my Subzero fridge there for $159.99

Really!
